Connecting Communities Through Digital Innovation

The Western Australian Network of Alcohol and other Drug Agencies (WANADA) stands as the independent voice of the alcohol and other drug sector in WA, representing member services across the state. With more than 90 locations providing critical treatment and support services, WANADA plays a vital role in enhancing the health and wellbeing of all Western Australians by reducing the harms associated with alcohol and other drug use.

When WANADA approached Loaded Communications, they needed more than a website. They needed a comprehensive digital platform that could serve multiple audiences: community members seeking help, sector professionals accessing resources, researchers finding data, students exploring career pathways, and member organisations collaborating on industry advancement.

The challenge was creating a digital ecosystem sophisticated enough to handle complex functionality whilst remaining accessible and welcoming to people in crisis or distress seeking urgent support.

A Corporate Hub for Critical Resources

Loaded designed and developed the WANADA website to function as both a corporate presence and a comprehensive resource hub for the alcohol and other drug sector. The platform needed to balance professional credibility with approachability, ensuring that whether someone was a sector professional, a concerned family member, or someone personally affected by substance use, they could find relevant information quickly and without barriers.

The website architecture reflects WANADA’s diverse stakeholder groups. Clear navigation pathways guide different audiences to appropriate content. Community members can quickly access treatment options and service directories. Sector professionals find research reports, training providers, policy submissions, and workforce information. Students discover career pathways and educational resources. Members access exclusive tools, programs, and collaborative opportunities.

Built on WordPress, the site provides WANADA’s team with an intuitive content management system that supports the organisation’s substantial publishing requirements. Regular updates to research reports, news articles, event information, position papers, and corporate publications flow seamlessly through the platform.

The Green Book: A Progressive Web App for Service Discovery

The centrepiece of WANADA’s digital transformation is the Green Book, a sophisticated progressive web app (PWA) developed by Loaded as an integrated component of the broader WANADA ecosystem. The Green Book represents a fundamental shift in how Western Australians discover and access alcohol and other drug services.

Traditionally published as a printed directory, the Green Book needed to evolve into a dynamic, searchable, always-current digital resource. Loaded designed and developed the Green Book as a progressive web app, combining the accessibility of a website with the functionality of a mobile application.

The Green Book contains comprehensive listings of organisations providing Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) services throughout Western Australia. The aim is providing a concise, user-friendly directory that raises awareness of the diverse range of services available whilst enabling quick, location-based service discovery.

The decision to build the Green Book as a progressive web app was strategic. PWA technology delivers several critical advantages for a service directory targeting people who may be in crisis or accessing information from various devices and connectivity situations.

Progressive web apps work seamlessly across all devices without requiring separate iOS and Android development. Whether someone accesses the Green Book from a desktop computer in a library, a smartphone on public transport, or a tablet at a community centre, the experience remains consistent and optimised.

Real-Time Data Management

Behind the scenes, the Green Book integrates with WANADA’s data management systems, ensuring service information remains current without manual website updates. When member organisations update their service details, locations, contact information, or service offerings, these changes flow through to the Green Book automatically.

This real-time data architecture eliminates the frustration of outdated directories. When someone contacts a service, they can be confident the phone number works, the address is current, and the services listed are actually available. This reliability builds trust in WANADA as a credible information source.

API integrations enable sophisticated data management whilst maintaining simplicity for WANADA’s team. Service providers can update their own information through member portals, reducing administrative burden whilst ensuring accuracy.

WANADA’s investment in sophisticated digital infrastructure positions them as sector leaders not just in advocacy and policy, but in leveraging technology to improve service access and sector coordination.

The Green Book has become a model for other jurisdictions considering how to modernise service directories. The progressive web app approach offers a template for making critical social services discoverable, accessible, and user-friendly.

For Loaded, the WANADA project demonstrates how thoughtful digital strategy combined with modern technology can create platforms that genuinely serve communities. This wasn’t about flashy features or unnecessary complexity. It was about understanding user needs, respecting the sensitivity of the subject matter, and building systems that work reliably when people need them most.
